WHAT IS SWIRL FLAP ?
Swirl flaps are small butterfly valves fitted to the intake manifold just before the cylinder head intake ports of many modern automotive engines. The flaps are smaller than the intake manifold and therefore allow air to pass around them even when closed.
Swirl flap position is adjusted by an electrical or vacuum-actuated servo mechanism which is under the control of engine management system. In a typical implementation, the flaps will be closed at idle speed, creating additional turbulence in the intake. As engine speed increases, the flaps are gradually opened until, at around 2000 rpm, they are parallel to the airflow and present virtually no resistance. Their purpose is to ensure that the air entering the cylinder is sufficiently turbulent for good air-fuel mixing even at low engine speeds. This aids in reducing certain toxic emissions and may also improve low-end power and torque.
WHY DO YOU NEED TO REMOVE IT ?
Sadly swirl flaps are poor in design and are prone to failure. The below picture is of a used swirl flaps removed from a vehicle at 80k miles on the clock, as you can see the shaft is fractured (where the closest bolt meets the base)
When a swirl flaps fails, the debris drops down into the engine, either sticking in the valve port and jamming it open, causing the piston to collide with the valve, or falls into the cylinder itself causing the piston, valves and head to become damaged.
These parts must be repaired in order to prevent such damage and to avoid much greater costs. Vehicle owners who do not want to cover the repair costs can deactivate the working system of this part.
HOW TO HAVE SWIRL FLAP REMOVAL ?
Swirl Flap removal requires both mechanic and software operation. As mechanical, flaps must be fixed as parallel to the intake manifold to provide best air flow. Additionally swirl flaps actuator must be detaily checked for unexpected any boost leakage. Then the software is re-optimised for disabling hardware from the engine control unit. Thus, the removal is completed.
Here, at Performance 35, we have all solutions for your swirl flaps failures and allow you to get rid of your problem permanently with minimum costs by re-optimizing all maps related to swirl flaps system.
